LIORA | 4

After giving Liora a tour of the grounds, her dad showed her the parts of the house she hadn’t seen yet–like the bar in the entertainment room, or the gigantic indoor swimming pool. Then, the inevitable moment she’d been dreading the most happened.

They were on their way back through the house, heading toward his study when they ran into her dad’s wife. She was a gorgeous redhead and looked like a movie star, yet was tall enough to be a supermodel. In her Louboutin stilettos, the woman was practically the same height as Liora’s dad.

“Oh, there you are,” the woman greeted brightly, even as her blue eyes assessed Liora in an instant. She automatically looped her arm through Liora’s dad’s, as if staking her claim on him. “You must be Liora. I’ve been so anxious to meet you.”

“Liora, this is your stepmother, Natalie,” her dad introduced.

He didn’t move away from his wife, but neither did he acknowledge her arm looped around his. Liora wasn’t sure exactly how to decipher that, but she got the feeling her dad enjoyed starving the woman of his attention.

“Hi,” Liora said a little nervously because she knew Natalie was a Damned Soul that her father didn’t even like, which made it difficult to know how to act around her.

“What were you off doing, darling? Shopping again?” her dad remarked, eyeing the half dozen shopping bags one of the staff was carrying into the house.

“I have the banquet to put together, don’t I?” Natalie countered. “Speaking of shopping, have you explained her bedroom situation?”

“I did, yes, and she’s happy to be able to decorate it, herself,” her dad answered. “As I said she would be.”

Rather than being upset over that answer, though, Liora’s stepmom beamed at her. “Really? Oh, that’s exciting,” she said. “You let me know what you have in mind and we’ll get started on it right away. I have all the best designers on speed dial.”

“Natalie, she just got here, give her a minute to breathe before you start throwing designers at her,” her dad intervened.

“I’m just trying to be helpful, Aldion,” Natalie said. “Liora has all the time in the world to settle in if that’s what she wants. I’m merely offering my help and expertise.”

“Fine, fine,” her dad waved off, as he stepped away from her and laid his hand on Liora’s back to turn her toward their previous direction. “We’ll see you at dinner.”

“What? But–“

“We were just on our way to the study,” her dad cut her off, as he started leading Liora through the house again. “Business to discuss.”

“Nice to meet you,” Liora said out of brow-beaten manners more than sincerity. She snuck a glance over her shoulder to see the stunned and disappointed look on her stepmom’s face, as they walked away, and again she had mixed feelings about it. When they were a lot further away, she leaned into her dad to keep her voice down. “That was a little awkward.”

He gave her an amused look before it turned a little wicked. “Just wait.”

Liora’s mood lifted again when her dad did sit her down and start discussing business once they settled in his study. He even showed her a large, framed map of all of Hollow’s End to give her a better idea of how their territory was set up and which blocks they ‘leased’ to other criminal groups like street gangs, drug lords, and pimps.

He also went over the list of all their businesses, starting with the ones they profited from the most and working his way down from there. And he was nothing but patient with her. He answered every question she had and explained anything she didn’t understand.

Later that evening, Liora and her dad were in the entertainment room watching a movie when Natalie entered the room and crossed her arms over her chest.

“Is there a reason neither of you made an appearance at the dinner table?” she demanded.

Liora and her dad both looked at her over their shoulders, but it was her dad who spoke.

“We got busy in the study, dear, that’s all,” he said. “We had food delivered to us, don’t worry, we ate.”

“Oh, that’s nice, so glad you ate,” she replied sarcastically. “How about a little family time?”

“What do you think we’re doing now?” her dad countered.

Natalie stared at him heatedly for a moment before she cleared her throat. “Aldion, can I please speak to you for a moment?” she asked.

“We’re right in the middle of a movie, Natalie, can’t it wait?” he asked.

“It’s okay, Dad, I’m starting to feel a little tired, anyway,” Liora spoke up.

It was just an excuse, really. Liora wasn’t tired so much as restless. She enjoyed spending Magosa Escort time with her dad, but her brain was overflowing and her body hadn’t gotten nearly enough exercise for the day.

Besides, she didn’t feel comfortable being in the middle of their argument, regardless if Natalie was a soulie and had been a horrible person in life.

Her dad looked at her with surprise. “Are you sure?”

She nodded. “Yeah, it’s been a long day,” she said.

“Alright, gattina, I’ll be up in a minute to tuck you in,” he promised, as he pulled her in for a hug and kissed her on the cheek.

Liora climbed off the sofa and rounded it to head out the door, absently waving at Natalie and muttering a goodnight.

“Sleep well, dear,” Natalie said with strained pleasantry. The woman barely waited for Liora to be out of earshot before starting in on her dad. “Don’t you think she’s a little too old to be tucked into bed?”

“I missed the first eighteen years of my daughter’s life, Natalie,” her dad countered. “I’m not going to apologize for wanting to make up for that by spending time with her whenever I can. Normally, I let your little bouts of jealousy slide, but it’s quite selfish in this respect.”

“I’m not jealous, Aldion, I just thought you’d at least give me the chance to be involved with my stepdaughter,” Natalie said. “How are we supposed to get to know each other, if you’re leaving me out or hoarding her away in your study all day?”

“I’m sure you’ll have plenty of time to get to know her when I’m not hoarding her away in my study, dear,” he replied, patronizing her. “But I wouldn’t hold your breath. The last thing she needs or desires is yet another woman trying to dictate every minute of her existence.”

Liora heard him heading out of the entertainment room, so hurried through the halls to the family stairs so she could quietly make it to her room before he caught up to her. Inside, she closed the door as silently as she could, then opened her closet doors.

The note she’d found inside that morning had completely slipped her mind, so Liora was a little surprised to find all of her clothes, shoes, and accessories put away and the shopping bags removed. She’d just stepped inside to find the right clothes to change into when there was a light knock on her bedroom door.

It opened before she could respond and her dad peeked his head inside. He smiled at her, then entered the room fully to close the door behind him.

“You know, kitten, you don’t have to run from me,” he said, slightly amused. “I don’t care if you eavesdrop on my conversations. I have no secrets from you, especially when it comes to Natalie.”

Guilt rose to heat her cheeks and she shrugged. “Force of habit,” she said. “Sorry.”

“I understand,” he said and he meant it. “That’s why I’m letting you know that it doesn’t matter with me. Also, to be fair, you’re really at a disadvantage where I’m concerned because I can feel your presence, just as I was able to at your mother’s house when you were listening from the hallway.”

Liora’s mouth popped open as she recalled that moment, then laughed a little.

“Well, shit. Okay,” she accepted. “I didn’t even think about that.”

He just gave her an amused grin. “So, are you really tired?” he asked.

She worried her bottom lip. Liora’s first instinct was to lie because she was used to keeping her skills and passions to herself. The warm-ups and practicing she did had long ago become her way of escaping the miserable relationship she’d had with her mother. But if he could feel her presence, then it wasn’t like she’d be able to sneak into the gym without him noticing.

“Not yet,” she admitted. “I was just going to get some exercise in before bed.”

“You exercise before bed?” he questioned. “Aren’t you supposed to do that in the morning?”

“Maybe, regular exercising,” she replied. “I do it differently.”

Her dad smiled. “Well, now you’ve got me intrigued,” he said. “Would you like some company or do you want to be alone?”

The question gave her pause, as she considered the opportunity to keep her skills and passion all to herself that much longer. But his interest sparked something in Liora she’d never felt before. Probably because her mother had never taken an interest in anything she’d ever done, even when it wasn’t bad.

“You can watch, I guess,” she said, a little nervous, yet secretly excited to share her greatest passion with him. “It might be boring for you, though.”

The look he gave her was contrary. “Liora, I could watch you sleep and be happier than I’ve felt in centuries.”

“Okay,” she accepted. “I just need to change into something easier to work out in. I’ll be right out.”

He chuckled when she waved him out of the closet and closed the doors. Her grin was so wide it pinched her cheeks because she hadn’t missed the desire in his eyes. It felt wild and exuberating flirting with him. Even though there was an ingrained nagging in the back of her mind telling Kıbrıs Escort her it was wrong, it felt too good to stop.

After changing into a pair of capri style yoga pants and a sports bra, Liora used the full-length mirror in the closet to twist all of her curls into a bun at the back of her head. When she opened the doors, her father was sitting on the edge of the bed and smiled. His eyes swept over her more revealing outfit.

“I’m already liking this,” he said shamelessly.

Liora laughed. “I’m going to the gym,” she said. “I noticed you had a little room in there with some mats.”

“I can have as much room in there as you need,” he replied.

Leaving her bedroom, they wandered back downstairs to the gym, which was just off the indoor pool.

There was a treadmill, elliptical, stationary bikes, a smith machine, and free weights all in one area, while the other side of the room had open floor space with exercise balls, yoga mats, steps, and tension straps.

Liora looked around, happy to find the space was more open than she’d originally thought. “This is good,” she said, stopping at one of the yoga mats. “I used to have a library of music on my old phone, but I noticed it doesn’t work here.”

“Oh, yes, sorry about that,” her dad said, as he pulled his phone out of his slacks. “Since Hell offers the same career paths as the mortal realm, we have our own collection of musicians, artists, actors, and athletes.”

Sitting on the mat, Liora began her routine stretches. “So, none of the soulies here have ever heard of the songs we know?”

“No, even our classical music came from different composers,” he said. “Our music, like our TV shows and movies, evolved the same way as in the mortal realm, just with different artists making them.”

“Wow, so you still have genres like eighties music and grunge, just not by bands like Prince and Nirvana.”

“Correct,” he said. “I do have quite an eclectic library on my phone, which genre do you prefer for your workouts?”

“I usually start with classical and work my way into club mix,” Liora answered. “I like a little dubstep in my hip hop.”

Her dad smiled and flipped through his phone before he connected it wirelessly to the home stereo system and music started playing over the speakers in the room.

As Liora shifted into her next position, she watched her dad leave the gym as if he were going to the pool room. When he returned, he had a small towel and two bottles of water.

“Thanks,” she said when he handed her one of the bottles. She set it aside, knowing she would need it eventually.

Her dad took a seat on one of the exercise balls and watched her for a moment. With the bottom of her feet pressed together in front of her, Liora changed from sitting straight and pressing her knees toward the floor to stretching over her feet until she could feel the slight pull in her thighs.

“Do you want to walk me through these exercises?” he asked.

Liora lifted her face just enough to look at him and didn’t miss the same desire swirling in his eyes. She smiled and finished her count before sitting up and stretching her legs out in front of her again.

“Right now, I’m just stretching,” she answered. “I usually spend about ten minutes stretching to warm up all of my muscles before working on my core strength.”

“That’s smart,” he said. “Did you teach yourself how to do this, or were you in a class?”

Blood rushed to her cheeks and neck, though she wasn’t sure why she was so shy about telling him. Liora figure it was because it was the one thing she was the most passionate about, which made her feel protective over it. Instinctively, she was afraid that he might reject the part of herself she loved the most.

So, she just tried to shrug it off like it was no big deal. “I took ballet and modern dance in school,” she answered.

Liora moved into her next position of spreading her legs as far as she could and stretching her body over her right leg first, holding the top of her foot. It wasn’t until her dad suddenly appeared on the mat right in front of her, that she realized she’d been avoiding looking at him, too nervous to see his reaction to her answer.

When she turned her face to his, she saw him smiling at her with wonder, pride, and desire.

“Gattina, I don’t understand,” he said. “Why would you be embarrassed to tell me that you’re a dancer?”

Sitting upright again, she shrugged. “I don’t know,” she answered. “I guess it’s just always been the only thing I had that was mine. But I wasn’t able to pursue it the way most professional dancers do from a much younger age, so it became more of a hobby.”

Her dad studied her, a little darkness creeping into his eyes and expression. “Did you want to pursue it as a profession?” he asked.

“I was going to take my chances if the university has a performing arts elective,” she answered, stretching over her next leg. “But I have no idea if I’ll be able to make a profession Lefkoşa Escort out of it. Dance is highly competitive and I’m already eighteen.”

“You’re also a demon hybrid in Hell now, Liora,” he reminded her. “Things are different here. If you want to be a professional dancer, then you have every opportunity to pursue that dream. I want you to pursue it if that’s what you’re most passionate about.”

Feeling a spark of hope in her chest, Liora sat upright again and studied him. “You really think I’d have a chance here?”

“I know you do,” he reassured her. Framing her face in his hands, he leaned forward and kissed her softly. “And if the university doesn’t have the right programs, then I’ll hire you a private instructor or enroll you in a dance studio in the city. Or you can do all three if you want.”

“Really?” Liora asked, almost too afraid to hope, yet unable to keep the feeling from growing inside of her, anyway.

Her dad nodded, then looked around the room. “We can even convert this into a dance studio for you, so you’ll always have a place to practice,” he said. “It’s not like Natalie uses it and I have no need for it.”

Flinging her arms around his neck, Liora hugged him. “Thank you, Daddy.”

“Mmm, that sounds so good,” he said with a purr in his voice. “Of course, I hope you don’t mind that I’m going to be watching you practice and I’m going to be awed and proud, but having all kinds of inappropriate thoughts along the way.”

Leaning back with her arms still on his shoulders, Liora laughed, but it wasn’t from embarrassment. It was happiness and the thrill she got from their flirting. “I am extremely flexible,” she teased.

“Fuck, kitten, don’t tell me that,” he rasped, capturing her mouth again and kissing her a little harder, allowing his tongue to slip in to tease hers.

Abruptly, Liora jerked back with a gasp when she remembered that they weren’t technically alone in the house. “Shit, I forgot about Natalie and the staff,” she said quietly.

Her dad chuckled softly. “Don’t worry. I know where everyone in the house is at all times,” he said. “One of the perks of being a powerful demon.”

Her muscles relaxed, but before she could think about moving, her dad’s brows creased and he brushed his knuckles over her cheek.

“Did your mother keep you from pursuing your dream of becoming a dancer?” he asked.

Liora opened her mouth to respond, then shook her head slightly. “Dad, I don’t want you to feel bad about my relationship with Mom,” she said.

“You can’t save me from that, gattina,” he replied. “Even though I know you’ve been trying to.”

The guilt resurfaced again, but it wasn’t as strong as before. “The truth is, I understand why she didn’t want to be involved with my likes and dreams. I know she was just scared of hurting when it came time for me to leave, and that was the only way she could think of to protect herself.”

Her dad released a quiet breath. “Liora, that’s no excuse,” he said. “You shouldn’t have to be the understanding or forgiving one, you’re the child. She was your mother. You’re too good to be treated that way.”

Liora shook her head. “I wasn’t, though,” she confessed. “She wasn’t lying about me being out of control. I did some terrible things–“

“Which is completely normal for kids who can’t get attention from their parents any other way,” her dad cut her off. “It still goes back to how she was treating you. If she hadn’t been so distant and cold, would you have done any of those things?”

“I don’t know,” she answered. “Probably not.”

“See?” he said, brushing his fingers over the side of her face. He kissed her again on the mouth, then on the forehead. “You can let me in, baby. I’m not a human dad, I’m the Demon of Knavery, remember? There’s nothing you’ve done that could disappoint or upset me.”

Was that true? Liora was still too leery of finding out the hard way that it wasn’t, so she simply hugged him again.

“Thanks, Dad,” she said. “I appreciate it and everything you’ve said about me pursuing my dream. Do you think I could get some proper dance gear?”

“Of course,” he said, leaning back with a smile. “We can go shopping tomorrow after we leave the office and get you whatever you need.”

“Okay.” She smiled.

“And if you want to shop for your bedroom, too, let me know,” he added. “You don’t have to take Natalie up on her offer to help. She’s already decorated this entire house, it’s not like she needs an opinion on every single room.”

Liora chuckled. “Okay,” she repeated. “That sounds fun, too. We can make a whole day of it.”

“It’s a date.” He winked.

BAILEY | 4

Bailey loved everything about Rocco’s, which was the store that sold all of the local motorcycle gear and apparel. Leaving there in her new leather jacket and helmet, they stopped at a small boutique that sold organic, handmade beauty and bath products.

The only person behind the counter, who might’ve been the owner, looked a little frightened to have the Kings of Malum in her shop. But after Bailey ended up buying a ton of stuff, including Lilac candles for her bedroom, the woman was smiling and telling them to come in anytime.
